• First Days of School -- 

KINDERGARTEN: First day of school is Wednesday, September 3rd, 7:55-1:10.
GRADES 1 – 5: First day of school is Thursday, September 4th, 7:55-2:25

• Meet the Teacher is Tuesday, Sept. 2nd at 2:00-3:00 – Gilham will host a Meet the Teacher event on Tuesday, September 2nd from 2:00-3:00, the day before the first day of school for Kinders..

This is a wonderful opportunity for your child to view their new classroom and introduce themselves to their new teacher and classmates. Please plan on attending! 

• Kindergarten Smart Start – Kindergarten students do not start with an assigned classroom and class lists are built as we learn more about our kiddos. The first two weeks of kindergarten has staggered attendance with our Smart Start schedule.

• All Kinder Students Attend: Sept. 3 & Sept. 8-10

• Only Last Name A–L: Attend Thursday, Sept. 4

• Only Last Name M–Z: Attend Friday, Sept. 5

• No Kindergarten Sept. 11 & 12 (parent/teacher conversations)

• Regular school schedule begins on Monday, Sept. 15.

• Regular School Schedule -- The  school schedule this year.  

Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday  starting at 7:55  and ending at  2:25.

Wednesday starts at 7:55 and ends at 1:10.

• How is your student getting home – Links were included in your welcome letter from your teacher.  In case you missed it, please make sure so let us know how your student is getting home.  We need to know how your student is getting home on a daily basis.

• UPDATE – How do I find my child’s bus stop? --  4J’s Transportation Department has set up a system for finding your child’s bus stop and times. New this year all students need to be signed up to be able to take the bus, even if they rode the bus last year.  Make sure you do this ahead of the first day of school.  Use this link for information about bus stops and getting your students signed up for the bus – https://4j.lane.edu/busroutes

• School Supplies -- Below is a list of what we are needing students to bring with them to school this year.  If you are wanting to donate to a classroom fund or to the school, please reach out to the office for more information.

$15 Suggested Donation for Supplies*

 

*This fee is based on an average need per student in a typical school year. Please contribute what you can. Every dollar goes towards providing supplies to every student at Gilham. 

If you are able to contribute more, this will go directly toward the school supply purchases.

• Arrival Procedures – All students will enter the building through their assigned areas at 7:50. Students arriving before the doors open should wait in line. 

Entrances -- 

K/1/2 will enter through the main door. 

3/4/5  will enter through the side entrance to the right of the main door. 

• Morning Breakfast – Breakfast will begin serving at 7:30 in the cafeteria and will end at 7:50. Students wanting breakfast may walk to the cafeteria. When they finish eating, they will stay in a  designated area until it is time to walk to class. Breakfast and lunches are free for all students.

• Dismissal Procedures – At the end of the day, students will exit the building with their teacher, using their designated entrance/exit doors. Bus riders will walk directly to their bus. Students biking or walking will be dismissed. Students waiting to be picked up will wait with their teacher in the designated areas.  Parents are encouraged to stay on the front sidewalk and students will come to them.  We need to keep the designated spaces clear so all students can see their parents.  

• Parking Lot Reminders -- The parking lot is for families who want to walk their child to the sidewalk during arrival or who wish to meet their child at the end of the day at dismissal. Please note the following rules for the parking lot:

• ONLY cross using the crosswalk. Students and families should never cut across the driveway.

• Before using the crosswalk, students and adults must stop and look for cars.

•Curbside Pause Parking Reminders -- In the mornings, students may be dropped off along the curb. At the end of the day, drivers can pause park along the curb to pick up their students when they come out at dismissal. Please note the following rules for pause parking:

• Drivers must remain in their cars at all times.

• Drivers should pull forward as space becomes available.

• Drivers should NOT stop in marked crosswalk areas.

• When getting in or out of a car, students must use the door on the sidewalk side. Students should never get in or out of a car on the driver’s side. It’s unsafe for the student and it slows traffic.

Drivers must remember to ALWAYS yield at the painted crosswalks and sidewalks.

• Update Your Child’s Health Information – Ensure your child’s health records are current. We want to be aware of respiratory-based diagnoses, allergies, or other health conditions. Linked here are the Asthma Assessment Form and the General Medical Profile Form, which you can email or deliver to front office staff.

• Oregon Student Cell Phone & Smart Watch Ban – 

Starting October 31, all Oregon school districts must put in place a policy to ban student cell phones and smart watches during school hours. Currently, students must keep these devices powered off and put away during school hours.  This includes smart watches.  

If staff see a phone or watch during school, staff will:

• 1st offense (teacher holds until end of day)

• 2nd offense (stays in office until end of day)

• 3rd offense (parent/guardian picks up from office)

The school is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged personal property brought to school. These items are best left at home.

• Fill Out the Volunteer Background – Want to volunteer at Gilham this year? Complete a  4J Volunteer Background Check now, so you'll be cleared for two years! More information can be found here. 

• Make school travel fun! – This year, consider how your student gets to school. Walking, biking, skating, scooting, busing, or carpooling all support health, learning, safety, and the environment. If driving is the only option, try parking a few minutes away and walking the rest. It avoids parking lot stress and gives you extra time to connect with your child.

• Primeros días de clases --

JARDÍN DE INFANTES: El primer día de clases es el miércoles 3 de septiembre, de 7:55 a 1:10.

• Meet the Teacher es el martes 2 de septiembre de 2:00 a 3:00: Gilham organizará un evento Meet the Teacher el martes 2 de septiembre de 2:00 a 3:00, el día antes del primer día de clases para niños de jardín de infantes.

Esta es una oportunidad maravillosa para que su hijo/a conozca su nuevo salón de clases y se presente a su nuevo maestro/a y compañeros/as. ¡No se pierda la oportunidad de asistir!

• Inicio Inteligente de Kínder: Los alumnos de kínder no comienzan con un aula asignada, y las listas de clases se crean a medida que conocemos mejor a nuestros pequeños. Las dos primeras semanas de kínder tienen asistencia escalonada según nuestro horario de Inicio Inteligente.

• Todos los estudiantes de kínder asisten: 3 de septiembre y del 8 al 10 de septiembre

• ACTUALIZACIÓN: ¿Cómo encuentro la parada de autobús de mi hijo/a? El Departamento de Transporte de 4J ha implementado un sistema para encontrar la parada y el horario de autobús de su hijo/a. Como novedad este año, todos los estudiantes deben estar inscritos para poder tomar el autobús, incluso si ya lo hicieron el año pasado. Asegúrese de hacerlo antes del primer día de clases. • Desayuno: El desayuno comenzará a servirse a las 7:30 en la cafetería y terminará a las 7:50. Los estudiantes que deseen desayunar pueden caminar hasta la cafetería. Al terminar de comer, permanecerán en un área designada hasta que sea hora de caminar a clase. El desayuno y el almuerzo son gratuitos para todos los estudiantes.

• Procedimientos de Salida: Al final del día, los estudiantes saldrán del edificio con su maestro, utilizando las puertas de entrada/salida designadas. Los estudiantes que viajen en autobús caminarán directamente a su autobús. Los estudiantes que vayan en bicicleta o caminando serán despedidos. Los estudiantes que esperen a ser recogidos esperarán con su maestro en las áreas designadas. Se anima a los padres a permanecer en la acera delantera y los estudiantes se acercarán a ellos. Debemos mantener despejados los espacios designados para que todos los estudiantes puedan ver a sus padres.

• Recordatorios sobre el estacionamiento: El estacionamiento es para familias que deseen acompañar a sus hijos a la acera a la llegada o que deseen reunirse con ellos al final del día a la hora de salida. Tenga en cuenta las siguientes normas de estacionamiento:

• Cruce únicamente por el paso de peatones. Los estudiantes y sus familias nunca deben cruzar la entrada.

• Antes de utilizar el cruce de peatones, los estudiantes y adultos deben detenerse y observar si hay vehículos.

• Recordatorios de estacionamiento en la acera: Por la mañana, se puede dejar a los estudiantes en la acera. Al final del día, los conductores pueden estacionar en la acera para recoger a sus estudiantes cuando salgan a la hora de salida. Tenga en cuenta las siguientes reglas para el estacionamiento en la acera:

• Los conductores deben permanecer en sus vehículos en todo momento.

• Los conductores deben avanzar a medida que haya espacio disponible.

• Los conductores NO deben detenerse en las áreas marcadas para el cruce de peatones.

Al subir o bajar de un vehículo, los estudiantes deben usar la puerta del lado de la acera. Nunca deben subir ni bajar del lado del conductor. Es peligroso para el estudiante y ralentiza el tráfico.

Los conductores deben recordar SIEMPRE ceder el paso en los cruces peatonales y aceras pintadas.

• Actualice la información médica de su hijo: Asegúrese de que el historial médico de su hijo esté actualizado. Queremos estar al tanto de diagnósticos respiratorios, alergias u otras afecciones. Aquí encontrará el Formulario de Evaluación de Asma y el Formulario de Perfil Médico General , que puede enviar por correo electrónico o entregar al personal de recepción.

• Prohibición de teléfonos celulares y relojes inteligentes para estudiantes en Oregón –

A partir del 31 de octubre, todos los distritos escolares de Oregón deben implementar una política para prohibir el uso de teléfonos celulares y relojes inteligentes por parte de los estudiantes durante el horario escolar. Actualmente, los estudiantes deben mantener estos dispositivos apagados y guardados durante el horario escolar. Esto incluye los relojes inteligentes.

Si el personal ve un teléfono o un reloj durante el horario escolar, deberá:

• 1.ª infracción (el profesor retiene hasta el final del día)

• 2da infracción (permanece en el cargo hasta el final del día)

• Tercera infracción (el padre/tutor lo recoge en la oficina)

La escuela no se responsabiliza por la pérdida, el robo o los daños a los objetos personales que se traigan a la escuela. Es mejor dejarlos en casa.

• Completa tu historial de voluntariado : ¿Quieres ser voluntario en Gilham este año? Completa tu verificación de antecedentes de voluntariado 4J ahora y tendrás dos años de autorización. Puedes encontrar más información aquí .

¡Haz que el viaje escolar sea divertido! Este año, piensa en cómo llega tu hijo a la escuela. Caminar, andar en bicicleta, patinar, usar el patinete, usar el autobús o compartir el coche favorecen la salud, el aprendizaje, la seguridad y el medio ambiente. Si conducir es la única opción, intenta aparcar a unos minutos de distancia y caminar el resto. Así evitarás el estrés del aparcamiento y tendrás más tiempo para conectar con tu hijo.
